RAJPURA, MAY 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiromani Akali Dal alliance pipped the Congress for the post of municipal council vice president by a single vote, here today.

SAD-BJP alliance candidate Rajinder Talwar got 12 out of the 23 votes polled. Two independent members Ram Pal Rana and Varinder Mohan failed to turn up for the voting. In the 25 member house, BJP and SAD have a combined strength of 12, Congress 8, CPM one, while four are independents. Some Congress leaders alleged that BJP-SAD alliance had worked to stop the two independent members to attend today8217;s meeting. However, MC president Pandit Tirloachan Dev refuted the allegation saying that Ram Pal Rana had reached late by few hours and the voting had been finished by that time. He claimed that Rana had told him that coming from outstation his bus was delayed.

Meanwhile, 11 members belonging to the Congress have alleged that the ruling alliance had kidnapped and detained the and two independent members. They have demanded that the election be declared void and elections held afresh.
