NEW DELHI, SEPT 30: Dr S C Jain, member-secretary with the Law Commission of India, is tipped to be appointed member of the Election Commission in place of G.V.G. Krishnamurthy, who retired today.
Law Ministry sources said that Jain was the frontrunner among three names doing the rounds to succeed Krishnamurthy, the others being Dr Raghbir Singh, Secretary of the Legislative Department in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, and R.L. Meena, Law Secretary.
Jain and Singh belong to the Indian Legal Service while Meena is from Indian Administrative Service. The three-member Election Commission already comprises of two officers from the Indian Administrative Services, Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill and Election Commissioner J S Lyngdoh.
After the EC was turned into a multi-member body in 1993, the convention has been to have at least one member from the legal service on the highest body incharge of conducting elections in the country. Outgoing member Krishnamurthy was also from theIndian Legal Service and sources said that as such it was likely that Jain, who is also from the same service, would find a place in the vacant slot of the Election Commission.
