
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICEPUNE, May 15: K V Ganesh and Rushmi Chakravarthi survived jitters before booking semi-final berths in the men8217;s and women8217;s singles respectively of the Western India tennis tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana courts, here today.
Second seed K V Ganesh dropped the first set to Maharashtra8217;s Shailesh Dhoble, the seventh seed, but kept his nerve to come back with a cautious display marked by fine placements. Ganesh clinched the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.Top seed Rushmi registered an identical scoreline to oust sixth seed Aparna Srinivasan, striking rhythm at right time.
Karnataka8217;s Pralhad Srinath stopped giant killer Ajay Ramaswami Maharashtra 6-2, 6-4, confining the Pune lad to the baseline while effecting winners.
Srinath now takes on top seed Vasudeva Reddy of Andhra Pradesh, who scrapped unseeded Amod Wakalkar of Maharashtra in a 55 minutes 6-3, 6-0. While, third seed and current National grass court Calcutta champion Nitin Kirtane stopped unseeded K S Shivshankar of Karnataka 6-1, 6-3. Nitin will now play K V Ganesh in the other semi-final tomorrow.
In the women8217;s section, second seed Arati Ponnappa, the present National grass and hard court champion will take on the challenge of K Janaki, winner of the Mumbai hard court and Gujarat State meets in the semis. Arati defeated fifth seed V Arathi of Karnataka 6-3, 6-2, while K Janaki Maharashtra disposed off seventh seed Joy Rodriques 6-2, 6-1 in today8217;s quarter-finals.
