Cutting edge
What a week! Dominated by style and fashion, there were at least a dozen fashion shows, store launches and assorted events. Leading the week8217;s calendar was a hair show held at the St Andrews Auditorium in Bandra. Put together by L8217;Oreal, the international award-winning hair dresser Guy Kremer and his associate Johnny Engstron, from London, were flown down for the event.
Model co-ordinator Rasna Behl put together a fashion show with lesser-known models parading clothes from Bandra-based stores Upper Crust and Wardrobe. A hair competition with the city8217;s top stylists was also organised and the panel of judges included ace lensmen Atul Kasbekar. The winner of the competition was Adhuna Babani, the woman who runs Juice, the avant garde salon in Worli. Odd8217; or Mama Juice8217; as she is called, is originally from London and moved to Mumbai a few years ago. Initially, she helped L8217;Oreal set shop here, then she set up her own salon which is reputed to be the cutting edge of hair design. YoMama!
Male order
On Monday, there was another show 8212; this time a fashion show. Put together by Achla Sachdev, on display was the menswear range from Glitterati. As expected, the show drew in large numbers and The Fashion Bistro was so packed that it was difficult to breathe. Women, decked in their finest, showed up in droves to get a good look at the city8217;s finest studmuffins.
From Ramona Garware to Svetlana Casper, the ladies indulged in the once-male sport of ogling. And at the receiving end were models John Abraham, Dash Saxena and Nikhil Chinappa.
There were also a handful of men in the audience 8212; Gautam Kapoor and architect Karan Grover who came with Glitterati designer James Ferreira. Designers themselves, they had obviously come to check out the new fashions.
Crystal clear
Achla was not the only ramp queen put on a show this week. Sabah Khaleli got together with Sharmila Khanna to put on a show for Swarovski. The Austrian-based crystal company launched its first boutiquein India, at Crossroads, this Friday. Actually, the duo put together two shows that evening 8212; one for the press and the other for the city8217;s socialites.
Perhaps the press were shooed out because the owners of Swarovski felt that the collective bank balance of the members of the fourth estate were not large enough to qualify them as clients. Anyway, at the more exclusive event apparently, Sangeeta Bijlani and Azharuddin mingled with Sushmita Sen and Hasina Jethmalani. On the ramp 8212; and this we can vouch for 8212; were top models like Ujwala Raut, Nina Manuel and Bipasha Basu. The show choreography was simple yet elegant. And the jewellery that the models wore 8212; all Swarovski designs 8212; were equally breathtaking. The only negative were the gowns that the models were draped in. Designed by Azeem Khan, they were so ornate that they detracted attention away from the jewellery. Sometimes, they even swallowed up the jewellery.
Bad choice!
Snap shots
This week also saw the opening of Prabuddha DasGupta8217;s exhibition of photographs on Ladakh. On display at the Piramal Art Gallery, NCPA, a small wine and cheese party was held there, on Saturday. Several of his discoveries8217; and model friends were spotted 8212; Mehr Jesia and Arjun Rampal, Alison Kanuga, Tina Tahiliani-Parikh, Sangeeta Chopra and Tarun Raghavan and Sheena Sippy, to name a few.
While this exhibition revolves around landscapes, Prabuddha is best known for his glamour work. He is the man behind the stunning Vama pictures featuring Ujwala Raut and the infamous Tuff Shoes ad with Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman. And his book on women 8212; it is an absolute classic!
And finally8230;
While this week seemed to be about style and elegance, there is one man 8211; who is always the brains behind the events 8212; who could learn a thing or two about dressing himself up. A D Singh may be hot when it comes to running some of this city8217;s most happening and swinging night spots, but he seems to have little sense of style. Since he is the official king ofparties, A D has to be seen everywhere. But please, can he stop showing up like he does.
This Wednesday, his restobar, Soul Fry celebrated its first anniversary. And what was AD wearing? A black jacket with black trousers that looked exactly like the outfit he wore to the opening of Co, the Bowing Company, just a few months ago. Actually this attire of AD8217;s seems to be his standard-issue uniform to be worn every where. Perhaps it is about time AD updated his wardrobe?
Just a suggestion!
