
SURAT, July 22: Four people armed with country-made revolvers and knives barged into a diamond workshop located at Mahidharpura, but failed in their daylight loot attempt on Thursday afternoon.
While two of the assailants were overpowered and beaten up by a mob, the other two managed to escape. The Mahidharpura police have recovered a country-made revolver and a sword from the scene of crime.
Rattan Avtarsingh Ahir 27, a resident of Gurunagar slum in the city, Indrajit alias Subhash Jagirsingh Ahir 20 of Varachha Road, Krishan Yadav 23 and Subhash Ranvirsingh 25 8212; all originally residents of Uttar Pradesh and presently working as diamond polishers in various diamond units of the city 8212; barged into a diamond workshop at Kansara Sheri around 2:30 pm today afternoon.
According to complainant Ashok Champak Papaiyyawala, the workshop owner, two of the robbers were armed with country revolvers and the other two with long knives. Immediately after entering the first floor premises, they cut off the telephone lines, lined up all the occupants in a corner and demanded everything 8212; diamonds and cash 8212; from the workshop.
However, Pappaiyawala and his son Kaushal overpowered two of the assailants and raised an alarm, after which a crowd gathered at the spot. Sensing trouble, the four attempted to escape but Rattan and Indrajit were caught.
While Rattan sustained grievous injuries when he jumped from the first floor, both he and Indrajit were severely beaten up by a mob before being handed over to the police. Rattan is being treated at the Mahavir hospital, while Indrajit is lodged in the Mahidharpura police station, the police said.
All the four are said to have come to the city as migrant labourers about four years ago. They had been switching jobs frequently, police investigations have revealed. Efforts are now on to nab the other two involved in the loot, the Mahidharpura police stated.
