
MUMBAI, April 11: Bombay Republicans A overcame stiff resistance when they defeated Union Bank 2-1 in the Bombay Hockey Association-conducted Senior Division League encounter at the Mahindra Stadium today.
Lynden Zuzarte gave Republicans the lead in the ninth minute. But UBI restored parity 10 minutes later through Rajesh Matkari who sounded the boards after Stanley Thomas had done the spadework.
The youthful Republicans had a slight edge in the interesting proceedings that followed after the change of ends. And ace striker Vijay Alphonso converted their superiority into terms of a goal when he scored from a penalty-corner in the 39th minute to seal victory.
There will be no matches at this venue on Easter Sunday.
One-sided affairs
Four goals by Elton Menezes were the highlight of Malad A’s 6-0 triumph over Mahim in the City-Suburb Areawise tournament, conducted by Hockey Association of Mumbai, at the St Andrew’s ground, Bandra. Lenny Soares scored the other two goals for Malad.
In anothermatch, Parel B defeated Eastern Suburbs 6-0. N Sapkal (2), R Jadhav (2), S Mumble (1) and B Yesur (1) were the goal-getters.
Piramal champs
Piramal Enterprises beat 61 Cavalry 10-5 in the final of the Presidents Polo Cup during the 53rd Annual Horse Show & Polo tournament at the Mahalakshmi Race Course on Thursday.
Piramal were the favourites with a better goal tally of 17 against Cavalry’s 11.
The team 61 Cavalry made many forays into the Piramal half but could not translate the moves into goals. For the winners Lokendra Singh scored five goals and Manupal Godara netted four. Dhruvpal Godara and Vishal Singh were the other members of the Piramal.
Income-Tax tops
Income-tax won the F Division Times Shield cricket tournament final when they defeated Lubrizol by virtue of their first innings lead in the four-day final.
