In a major legal victory for Pakistan’s embattled military ruler Pervez Musharraf, the Supreme Court today cleared the path for the General to seek re-election as President in uniform. This deals a big blow to the Opposition.

The apex court gave a split 6-3 verdict, in which the presiding judge, Justice Rana Bhagwandas, dissented, and threw out a raft of petitions challenging Musharraf’s holding two offices and his plans to get re-elected while continuing as army chief.

“The petitions hereby are dismissed as not maintainable,” said Justice Bhagwandas, who headed the nine-judge Bench.

Lawyers for Pakistan’s Opposition said they would appeal against the ruling. Presidential elections are due on October 6.

Flag-waving Opposition supporters and anti-government lawyers waiting outside the court chanted “Shame! Shame!” and “Go, Musharraf! Go!” as the verdict was announced. Musharraf has given a commitment to the apex court that he will give up his uniform if he wins another five-year term in office on October 6.
