Delay8217; in rewriting history
Roopnagar: Thakur Ram Singh, president of the 8220;Itihaas Sankalan Yojna8221; a body affiliated to the RSS today said because of pressures from its allies, the BJP government was unable to implement its agenda in re-writing the quot;distortedquot; and quot;incorrectquot; history, at a function to mark the beginning of the 52nd century according to the Hindu calendar. He said replacing the Christian calender with the Hindu one, was a part of the BJP8217;s agenda to reverse the quot;British policy of Chritianising8217; the Indian society.quot; He again blamed the allies for delay in the matter.

Sports schemes
Patiala: Brahm Mohindra, a senior Congress leader and former minister, sought the immediate intervention of the Union government to stop transfer of the scholarship scheme, All India Rural Sports Tournament, National Sports Festival Women and North-East Sports Festival from the National Institute of Sports, Patiala. In a statement here today, he appealed to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to personally intervene in the matter.

Power shutdown
Patiala: Power supply from 66 kv sub-station at Pasiana will be suspended to 66 kv NIS Patiala from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow.According to a PSEB spokesman, with the suspension of power supply to NIS sub-station areas falling under 11 kv feeders including Officers Colony, NIS Bahera road, polo ground, Kartarpur, Mohindra college , Kesar Bagh, Sanjay Colony, Dhillon Colony, Raj Colony, Raghomajra, Kuldeep Marg, new Sabzi Mandi and old Ghas Mandi, Dhak Bazar, Moranwali Street, Shahi Samadhan, Nirbhai Colony, Samania Gate and Jejjianwala Mohalla. Spokesman said that the power supply will be suspended due to some maintenance work at 66kv sub-station at Pasiana and so the supply to the areas falling under Pasiana sub-station will also be suspended tomorrow.

Annual function
Patiala: Punjabi University vice-chancellor Joginder Singh Puar has said that since the state government is facing cash crunch, colleges should stop looking towards universities for grants. He said this while presiding over the annual function of the local Government College for Girls GCG, held here today. For their further expansion, colleges needed to generate their own funds, Puar emphasised. He suggested that this could be done by collecting voluntary donations from the students coming from well off families.

2 caught taking bribe
Patiala: Rajinder Singh, a junior engineer with the Punjab State Electricity Board posted at Devigarh, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 1,500 for lying a natural wire, from Bhupinder Singh of Gangrouli village. According to the information available from the Vigilance Department here, the raid was conducted by a team headed by Ranjit Singh Dhillon, DSP. A case has been registered. Meanwhile, Ramesh Kumar Garg, a bank manager working with Indian Bank here, was also caught red-handed taking Rs 5,000 from Mannu Kaushik, regarding a bank loan.

Sales tax
Patiala: The sale of packed and branded halwai goods and bakery items shall be subject to five per cent tax at first stage from tomorrow in the state. The compulsory registration limit for those dealing in such goods shall be 4.5 lakh to exclude the dealers with small gross turnover, according to a press release issued here today by the Excise and Taxation Department, Punjab.

More milkfed products
Patiala: Milkfed, operating under the cooperative sector and manufacturing Verka brand of milk and other products, has decided to manufacture indigenously made products like rasgullas and gulab jamuns through mechanised process which would be a perfectly hygienic process. The product would have a higher shelf life and will be prepared under full sanitary conditions. This was announced by S.S. Sandhu, managing director of the Patiala Milk Plant, while speaking at a function after he was presented with the 8220;Gem of India Award 8217;98 8221;.

Free Artificial limbs
Kharar: Under the free artificial limbs project, a free artificial limbs examination camp will be organised by the Kharar Rotary Club in collaboration with the Chandigarh Midtown Rotary Club at Khalsa Senior Secondary School here on March 28. The club secretary Harpreet Singh Rekhi said a team of expert doctors will examine the needy handicapped persons for providing them free artificial limbs.

Kharar: Jagjiwan Lal, sarpanch of nearby Tira village, has been elected president of the Ksandi Area Gram Panchayat Sabha formed by the panches and sarpanches of over three dozen village panchayats of Kharar tehsil.
