GURDASPUR:
A sum of Rs 70 lakh will be spent by the drainage department to build studs and spurs in the Beas river at Bahadurpur Rajoa village, 30 km from hre, to save the cultivable land from soil erosion.
Deputy Commissioner S.K. Sandhu disclosed this here today after inspecting the flood control work being undertaken at Bahadurpur Rajoa, Chhisra and Raju Bela villages situated along Beas. Sandhu said that the technique which was used to tame Brahmaputra in Assam, was being used by the drainage department to control Beas. In this technique, bamboo frames filled with heavy stones are dug into the bottom of the river.

BATALA:
Gupta Cotton Traders’ Mill caught fire on the city road around 4 p.m. today, forcing more than 10 shop owners in its vicinity to vacate their premises. Factory owner Ajay Mahajan said he had suffered a loss of about Rs 5 lakh.Cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
Superintendent of Police (Operation) Vivek Mishra said he had requisitioned fire tenders from Amritsar and Gurdaspur. While fire tenders from Amritsar were awaited for two hours, Mishra said that authorities at Gurdaspur declined the request.

MOGA:
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has appointed Balwant Rai Kapoor as chairman of the Labour Cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. Announcing this, here today Vijay Dhir, press secretary of Indian National Trade Union Congress, Punjab said AICC president has taken this step to bring more coordination between the Pradesh congress and its allied constituents specially the trade unions and labour cell.

ROOPNAGAR:
Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu has assured adequate representation to the freedom fighters in various committees. While attending a special meeting of the freedom fighters here today, Sidhu announced that their wards shall be imparted free education in local schools. He said the local Government Primary School will be renamed after Lala Lajpat Rai.
Crime
BILASPUR:
Hansraj, resident of Damshra village of Ghumarwin sub-division, was murdered on Friday evening. According to the police sources, a case under section 302 IPC has been registered against five persons including Sita Ram, Jagatpal, Nandlal and Pappi who were arrested earlier. According to district police chief Anuraj Garg, Sita Ram had borrowed Rs 30,000 from the deceased for the marriage of his daughter. The accused had tied Hansraj with a tree and charged lathis blows to him. Later, they took him into the house of Sita Ram where he was beaten again, as a result of which he died.
