Apropos of the editorial 8216;House, arrested8217; IE, August 26, certainly we don8217;t need such politicians 8212; they cannot be called leaders 8212; whose thoughts and actions are completely irrelevant today. May be when they are on foreign tours they should take time out to visit other parliaments to learn a few lessons of behaviour and rules of business. Others should utilise the time when parliament is adjourned to do some useful reading.

The guilty of 1984

8226; Manoj Mitta deserves to be congratulated for his report, 8216;1984 L-G blames Rajiv Govt for delay in Army deployment8217; IE, August 26. I would request him to go in for a deeper investigation into the 1984 riots that saw the massacre of more that 3000 Sikhs in Delhi alone. How many people were arrested, how many were charged, how many cases were filed, how many 8216;8216;commissions8217;8217; were subsequently appointed, how many, rather, if any, person was indicted and if anyone was sentenced for the 8216;8216;genocide8217;8217;! It would also be revealing if the role of the judiciary is also discussed in depth! Twenty years have passed and the guilty roam free.

Total hypocrisy

8226; It appears the Leftists want the development of West Bengal at the cost of other states in our country. The Left parties8217; opposition to the Centre8217;s FDI cap in the telecom, insurance and aviation sectors while being supportive of this policy in WB and now the CPM8217;s latest move to oppose the initiatives taken by the Kerala government of having an agreement with Microsoft for the development of the IT sector in the state even though it has accepted the software giant as a partner in WB, are ample testimony to this. Such double standards by the Leftists will mar effective governance.

Constructive!

8226; Vajpayee accuses his successor of having adopted a 8220;confrontationist8221; position and says that the role of the BJP-led Opposition has been consistently 8220;constructive8221;. Presumably he refers to the many hours of relaxation which have been made possible by the Opposition8217;s walk-outs, to the wholesome entertainment which it has provided through its merry-making in the well of the House, and to the unpleasant but necessary duty it has performed of showing the uppity Speaker his place.

Strained PM

8226; Manmohan Singh is under pressure from all sides, including from the sharp shooting and dictatorial Sonia Gandhi. She has in no time admirably consolidated her position at the steering wheel, with a foot on the clutch. Thus, perhaps, rudeness is the result of the stress the PM is facing from all quarters. But a statement labelling Manmohan Singh as 8216;8216;rude8217;8217; coming from George Fernandes is surprising. Fernandes himself has not exactly been a model of parliamentary behaviour.
