AHMEDABAD, July 5: Even as the state continued to receive rain on Sunday, there was no report of any casualty. The irrigation department said that four dams in the Saurashtra region were overflowing due to rains. One dam in Porbandar and three in Jamnagar district were reported overflowing and their gates were opened.

Of the dams in Saurashtra and south Gujarat, many were overflowing due to heavy rainfall in those areas. These dams are Sorthi in Porbandar district, Sonmati and Gher dams in Jamnagar, Damanganga in Bulsar, Karjan in Narmada and Nenu-II in Rajkot, said the revenue flood-Control Cell.

Besides, Ahmedabad collector has banned agriculture activity and human inhabitation in the river-bed within the districts. This ban will remain effective till October 31, 1998, says an official press-note.

In Ahmedabad residents of Marutinagar and neighbouring localities in Viratnagar-Odhav area of Ahmedabad caused breaches in the Kharicut canal to prevent rain water from flooding their residences. Elsewhere in the city, three days of incessant rain tested the civic structure as well as patience of the people.

Ahmedabaed city received 26.3 mm rainfall during the 12 hours ending at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday, while in the 12 hours prior to that, rainfall recorded was 41.9 mm. Together, this takes the season8217;s rainfall total since June 1 to 178 mm. The Ahmedabad fire brigade received one call of house collapse from the Lakhia Ni Pole in the Khadia area and estate department personnel pulled down the house.

City control room said there were no major complaints so far of flooding in any areas except Naroda and Memco areas. In all, eleven pumps were pressed into service in different parts of the city on Sunday to flush out accumulated water.

Chanasma in Patan district received the highest rainfall in the state: 246 mm rains at the end of the 24 hours ending 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. It was followed by Mehsana town, which received 149 mm rainfall by that time. Vijapur and Gozaria received 107 mm and 104 mm rainfall respectively, while Kadi got 125 mm.

In Sabarkantha district, there was widespread rains in all parts. The talukas receiving moderate to heavy rains were Bhiloda, Khedbrahma, Idar, Vadali, Talod and Prantij.

In south Gujarat region, Surat and Navsari district were lashed by rains. Mahuva and Mandvi received 70 mm and 68 mm rain in Surat district while in Surat proper 58 mm rain was recorded. Vyara received 53 mm rain, while Chorasi taluka received 63 mm. Davhoi in Vadodara district also received heavy rains while Kapada area in Navsari district had 115 mm rainfall.
