CINCINNATI, AUG 15: Pat Rafter and Pete Sampras set up a grudge replay of last year’s final at the 2.45 million-dollar ATP Championships here as both scored straight-set semi-final victories.
Rafter, the second seed and defending champion who whipped Sampras here last year in an ill-tempered match decided by an over-rule on match point, played superlative serve-and-volley tennis yesterday on his way to victory against Russia’s world No 2, the fourth seed here, Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-4, 6-2.
Sampras notched his 16th career win in a long-running 26-match series with Andre Agassi, defeating his American compatriot 7-6 (9/6), 6-4 for the third time in six weeks.
Williams-Decugis in final
MANHATTAN BEACH: Sixth seed Serena Williams and France’s Julie Halard-Decugis will meet in the final after scoring upsets at the $ 520,000 Acura Classic Tennis Tournament.
Williams overpowered world No 1 Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-5 and Halard-Decugis rolled past error-prone Lindsay Davenport by the same score inthe semifinals.
