Akali Dal expels Lalpura

CHANDIGARH: Senior Akali Dal leader Prem Singh Lalpura was expelled from the party today for having decided against resigning from the Vidhan Sabha after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Tarn Taran.

The decision to this effect was taken unanimously by the political affairs committee PAC of the Akali Dal here at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister and party president Parkash Singh Badal. Lalpura could not take oath as member of the Lok Sabha as he failed to resign from the Vidhan Sabha within the stipulated period.

Mekhliganj tense

SILIGURI: Border Security Force personnel were put on alert in the Mekhliganj sub-division of Coochbehar district on Wednesday following tension between two communities regarding an incident of cattle lifting, the Superintendent of Police, Coochbehar, Sudhir Misra, said here.

Kolte passes away

NAGPUR: Marathi scholar, poet and former vice-chancellor of Nagpur University, Vishnu Bhikaji Kolte, diedhere on Wednesday. He was 89. A recipient of Padmashree in 1991, Kolte was born on June 22, 1908, at Narvel. He was vice-chancellor of Nagpur University from 1966 to 1972.

Bangladeshis held

JAMMU: The Border Security Force BSF arrested 79 Bangladeshi nationals, including 20 women and nine children, during the past 48 hours in Samba sector of Jammu region, a BSF spokesman said here.
