More arms, ammo seized in Chennai

CHENNAI: The city police has seized another cache of arms and ammunition, consisting of hundreds of gelatin sticks, detonators, three pipe bombs and a tiffin box bomb from a locked premises in north Chennai. An outfit called Islamic Defence Force8217; was suspected to be behind the stockpiling of the arms. The explosives were recovered after a man complained to the police that his rented apartment had been locked up since the last six months and he wanted it opened.

Hardwar clashes

HARDWAR: Pitched battles between two sections of sadhus at the Mahakumbh mela here left nearly 50 injured, seven of them policemen, police said here today. The skirmishes between Niranjani and Juna Akhara Naga sadhus took place at Har Ki Pauri during the second holy bath yesterday. Dispute over which section of the Naga sadhus should take the holy dip first triggered clashes.

MADURAI: In a shocking incident, a six-member gang hackedto death a top leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP, near the busy Shenoy Nagar area here late last night. The 52-year-old Paramasivam was a popular social worker in the city8217;s slum areas and was returning home on his two-wheeler after taking classes for poor students when he was attacked.

Jailbreak in AP

HYDERABAD: In a major jailbreak, 79 prisoners escaped from Nizamabad jail in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening. Sources said that the undertrials belonging to an inter-state gang attacked a sentry while they were returning to their cells after having dinner. They beat up at least seven guards and disconnected the telephone connection before escaping. Three prisoners were caught by the guards at the main gate. Sources clarified that Naxal prisoners did not escape.
