MUMBAI: Dhiren Bezboruah, editor of The Sentinel of Guwahati, was today named winner of the B D Goenka award for excellence in journalism for 1997. He has been fearlessly defending India’s unity and has been consistent in condemning secessionist demands, all the while standing up to serious terrorist threats. The selection was made by an independent jury headed by Nani Palkhiwala and comprising Justice B Lentin, N S Jagannathan, M V Kamat and T J S George. The award, consisting of Rs 1 lakh and a trophy, will be presented at a function later.

Rent Bill passed

MUMBAI: The State Legislative Assembly today unanimously passed the bill to extend the duration of the Bombay Rent Hotel and Lodging House Rates Control Act and to provide for five per cent hike in the standard rent. Replying to the five-hour long marathon debate on the bill, Housing Minister Sureshdada Jain assured the House that the government will take all steps to protect the interests oftenants. The bill will be introduced in the Council tomorrow and where it is likely to be passed unanimously.

Explosives seized

CHENNAI: The city police have averted a major disaster by seizing 103 kg of explosives including 11 bombs from three locations and arrested six extremists including Tahjuddin, vice-president of the banned fundamentalist organisation, Al-Umma. The seizure and arrests follow the interrogation of four of the five extremists.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi HC today criticised the CBI for not acting without first getting any court direction in the Rs 420-crore HDW submarine scam case and said that the agency should follow clues on its own. A division bench said that "unless some directions are given to the CBI, no action is being taken in the matter."

A Delhi Police patrolling van rammed into a tea stall in Central Delhi's Mandir Marg area, leaving one person dead early Thursday. The man killed in the accident has been identified as Gangaram Tiwari, who used to run the tea stall on the pavement, and sleep inside it.
