A Nigerian national was allegedly murdered at an apartment in the Pisoli area of Pune in the early hours of Monday. Police have identified the deceased as Emeka Christian (40).
A first information report (FIR) of murder has been registered at the Kalepadal police station against three other Nigerian nationals. Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajkumar Shinde said the murder was a fallout of a dispute related to a love affair.
According to the police, Emeka, along with a few other Nigerian nationals residing in Pune, had gone for dinner on Sunday night at the residence of a Nigerian woman, located in an apartment near the Dharmavat petrol pump in Pisoli.
“A prima-facie probe has revealed that one of the accused was in love with the Nigerian woman and often visited her. It is suspected that the deceased Emeka asked the woman to stay away from this accused. It led to a dispute, following which Emeka was attacked by the accused persons around 3 am on Monday…,” said senior police inspector Mansing Patil of the Kalepadal police station.
Gift Utah, Vice President of the Nigerian Students Union in Pune, rushed to the spot after the incident and admitted Emeka to Ruby Hall Clinic in Wanavdi, where he died while undergoing treatment, police said.
Meanwhile, a team from the Kalepadal police station launched a probe and booked three Nigerian nationals under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 103 (murder) and 3 (5). Police suspect that the accused thrashed Emeka and attacked him with a hard object, leading to his death.
Two accused — identified as Jhonpol Obinna Moneke (40) and Nyanemeko Madubuchi Oniya (43) — have been arrested, while efforts are on to nab the third accused, police said.
“Deceased Emeka, currently residing in the Pisoli area, was into the business of selling clothes and had a valid visa and passport for residing in India till 2027. Accused Moneke and Oniya are also known to be into cloth selling business. Oniya also worked as a gym trainer. Further investigation is on,” Patil said.
