Ashwin Naik in city

MUMBAI: Underworld don Ashwin Naik was brought to the city amidst tight security on Saturday morning and has been remanded to Kala Chowki police custody. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer remanded Naik to custody till September 3.

Death sentence

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has sentenced a 35-year-old man to death for killing his minor daughter after raping her about two years ago. Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta, who found accused Janesh, resident of Rajpur road, guilty of rape and murder of his 17-year-old daughter, also slapped a fine of Rs 13,000 onthe convict.

Pak deal with China

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Air Force PAF will soon receive about 100 of the latest version of the Chinese F-7 MG light fighter aircraft. The delivery of the aircraft is expected to be completed by October this year, NNI news agency on Saturday quoted highly-placed officials as saying.

Bank credit falls

MUMBAI: Bank credit to the commercial sector decreased by Rs 481 crore during the fortnight ended July 30, 1999. Bank credit was, however, higher by Rs 349 crore during April-July 1999, against a fall of Rs 6,001 crore in the corresponding period of 1998, according to RBI8217;s weekly statistical supplement.

Gaisal tragedy

NEW DELHI: Justice G N Ray, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, will head the one-man commission to inquire into the causes leading to the Gaisal train accident early this month in which 286 people were killed, official sources said.

Amarnath deaths

JAMMU: The death toll in the Amarnath yatra has reached to 15 with thedeath of two more pilgrims due to heart attack on Friday, officials said on Saturday. Mumbai8217;s Saka Ram 65 and Hardue Sadhu 75 of Bihar breathed their last at Pahalgam.
