Telecom package

NEW DELHI: Though the government is yet to receive formal clearance for the telecom package from the Finance and Law ministries, the matter now goes before the Union Cabinet on Tuesday. The decision followed a last-minute intervention by the Prime Minister8217;s Office late on Monday until Monday afternoon, it was expected that telecom would be discussed only on Friday. A discussion on the telecom case has now been added to the supplementary agenda.

Paes-Bhupathi win

LONDON: The top-ranked Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi moved clear of their third round opponents, Americans Patrick Galbraith and Justin Gimelstob in the doubles event at Wimbledon. Paes-Bhupathi, the French Open champions, moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.

Kabir remembered

NEW DELHI: The nation on Monday celebrated the 600th birth anniversary of Sant Kabir, the foremost of the nirguni poets. The main function held to mark the occasion was the release of atapes of Kabir bhajans by Vice President Krishan Kant at a programme at Siri Fort Auditorium on Monday evening. A symposium on the poet, who was born in 1399 in Varanasi and brought up by weavers after being abandoned by his mother, was held earlier.

Assam rivers in spate

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Monday with the rising Brahmaputra engulfing fresh areas while vast lands in north Bengal were inundated by rain-fed overflowing rivers. The Jiadhol, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, flooded more than forty villages in Dhemaji district of upper Assam, forcing more than 20,000 people to leave their homes.

15-yr-old held for rape

KANHANGAD:A 15-year-old schoolboy has been arrested on charges of murder and rape of a 13-year-old girl at Periya in Kerala8217;s Kasargod district. A ninth standard student raped the girl, staying next door, when she was returning home after a bath at a nearby stream on Sunday.
