Violence over desecration

CHENNAI: ONE person was killed and two others were injured when police opened fire at three places in Cuddalore and neighbouring Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu following outbreak of violence in the wake of desecration of an Ambedkar statue in Tindivanam recently.

Doda blast

JAMMU: AT least two persons were killed and eleven others injured when a powerful bomb exploded on Monday in Doda town of Jammu region. According to official sources, the bomb was planted near one Bhushan Shah8217;s house, a Bharatiya Janata Party activist.

Meghalaya results

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party UDP is in a close race with the Congress in Meghalaya Assembly elections having bagged four seats out of 10, results for which were declared so far. The Congress tally is just one behind UDP. The BJP for the first time bagged an Assembly seat in the state.

CM resigns

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Salseng C Marak on Monday submitted his resignation to theGovernor M M Jacob. The Governor requested Marak to continue till the new ministry is formed, according to a government press note. Counting of ballots polled on February 16 for 60-member assembly elections started on Monday.

Jatin Das assaulted

NEW DELHI: Renowned painter Jatin Das was today assaulted by VHP activists protesting against M F Hussain8217;s painting Hanuman carrying Sita at a 8220;radical art8221; show here. 8220;I just asked them why they were using filthy language when the mob suddenly turned to attack me,8221; Jatin Das said . The mob was protesting against the 8220;naked depiction8221; of Sita in the Hussain painting.
