Sharif’s bid to rein in President

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to curtail President’s power in Pakistan, the Nawaz Sharif Government has pushed through a Bill in the national assembly seeking to empower government to make appointments to high public offices without the head of the State’s consent. Ignoring protests from the Opposition, the Lower House passed the Federation Bill, 1998 by an overwhelming majority yesterday. As per the Bill, prior presidential assent for such appointments will also be optional.

NEW DELHI: Romesh Sharma, alleged frontman of Dubai-based underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim, is unlikely to be released from the Tihar Jail here despite the revocation of his detention orders under the National Security Act (NSA) by Delhi Lt Governor Vijai Kapoor.

17 drowned

CALCUTTA: Tragedy struck a group of Christmas revellers, when a mechanised country boat carrying them capsized in the Ganga at Diamond Harbour in South 24-Parganas district today. In all, 17people, including two children, drowned in the river.

Match fixing

NEW DELHI: The Government has taken a serious view of charges of betting and match-fixing in Indian cricket and has decided to examine the issue and will institute an enquiry if required. Replying to Rajya Sabha member Gurudas Dasgupta, Sports Minister Uma Bharati said she has asked for relevant details from the authorities concerned.

Holiday special

MUMBAI: Central Railway will run a superfast Holiday Special from Kurla Terminus to Howrah on January 5 to clear the extra rush of passengers. The special (181 dn) will leave Kurla Terminus at 2020 hrs will reach Howrah at 0515 hrs on January 7.

Poet dead

HYDERABAD: Noted Telugu poet and Kendra Sahitya Academy award winner, Pennarthi Vishwanadha Sarma, popularly known as Ajanta, died here today after prolonged illness. Sarma was 69 and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
