Iran planning new missile
TEHRAN: Iran will develop a new missile that will outdistance its predecessor, which is already capable of striking Israel, Iranian defence minister Ali Shamkhani said Saturday. Iran unveiled the Shahab-3 missile during a military parade Friday. The newly developed weapon has a range of 1,300 km, which means it can hit Saudi Arabia and Israel. Iran is believed to have received substantial missile technology from Russia and some from China and North Korea. The Shahab-3 is believed to be based on North Korea’s No Dong ballistic missile.
Gawli released
MUMBAI: Underworld don Arun Gawli was released from Thane Central Prison Saturday evening after completion of one year detention period under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act. Gawli was released from the prison around 6 pm amidst tight security after his counsel Ashok Patil pointed out that there was grave threat to the life of his client from rival Dawood Ibrahim-Choota Shakeel gangs. The donreached his residence around 8 pm amidst tight naka bandi along the road he was travelling. Vehicles were being searched at random to weed out suspects.
First Viagra death
NEW DELHI: A 44-year old man died after taking the wonder sex drug Viagra in the northeast, Dr KK Aggarwal, vice-president of the Heart Care Foundation of India said. He claimed that this was the first Viagra death in the country. Aggarwal said a caller informed the Essar heart care foundation hotline about the death of his brother-in-law. The hotline runs a free heart and medical counselling service.
Pawar re-elected
MUMBAI: Sharad Pawar was re-elected president of the Garware Club for a second term in the election held Friday. Pawar, former chief minister of Maharashtra, polled 1,900 votes against the 279 polled by Amarnath Kamath and 187 polled by AR Mohanty. The polling, however, was marked by controversy with the official number of votes cast being 2,749 against the 2,502 actually counted.

MUMBAI: TR Ramdas from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai and Subhashis Nag from Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai have been named for the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize for mathematical sciences. Anurag Sharma from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Debi Prasad Sarkar from Delhi University South Campus are among the 12 scientists selected for this year’s Bhatnagar awards, the nation’s highest awards in science. The names were announced by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research director general Dr RA Mashelkar on the occasion of CSIR foundation day Saturday.
