
Haj quota fixed at 66,000
NEW DELHI: The All India Haj Committee announced today that it has fixed a quota of 66,000 people for the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina for 1999. Application forms for the annual pilgrimage, which will be available at all the state Haj committees free of cost, should reach the committee offices concerned by August 24, a committee press release here said.
Postal staff split
NEW DELHI: The nation-wide postal strike crippled services for the fifth day on Monday even as a section of the striking staff called off the agitation while trade unions sought the PM8217;s intervention. About 20,000 postmasters, assistant postmasters, supervisors of the All India Association of Postal Supervisors announced their decision to withdraw from the strike.

CHENNAI: Families of fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy, would be paid 50 rupees per day till the fishermen returned to India.
Gujarat toll
GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat monsoon toll has risen to 23 with one more death reported from Bhavnagar in the past 24 hours. Six deaths were reported from Junagarh, four from Navsari, two each from Surat, Dahod and Sabarkantha and one each from Bhavnagar, Baroda, Anand and Banaksantha.
Pilgrim dies
SRINAGAR: One more Amarnath-bound pilgrim died at high altitude Sheshnag today taking the toll during the ongoing pilgrimage to six. The deceased, identified as Prasad son of Ram Lal of Kothai 8211; Ahmedabad, died 124 kilometres from Srinagar at an altitude of 3,718 metres high altitude.
