Uruguay-born Sebastian Quintana fired a dramatic late equaliser to earn Qatar a 1-1 draw against holders Japan in their Asian Cup opener today.

Naohiro Takahara8217;s close-range strike in the 61st minute had looked to be good enough until Quintana8217;s deflected free kick flew into the top corner in the 88th minute.

Eintracht Frankfurt striker Takahara clinically tucked in Yasuyuki Konno8217;s flicked cross with a left-foot volley for his 20th goal in 48 internationals.

But Japan were undone after Yuki Abe8217;s clumsy foul on Quintana, who blasted the subsequent free kick past Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi from 25 metres with the help of a deflection.

Japan, winners of last two Asian Cups in 2000 and 2004, trail Vietnam in Group B after the co-hosts8217; 2-0 victory over United Arab Emirates 2-0 at the weekend.
