PUNE, May 25: Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi leader Suresh Kalmadi returned to the Congress fold today, but a few of his mates from the Pune Vikas Aghadi will not follow his steps to avoid the risk of its members losing the posts of mayor, standing committee chairman and membership of the standing committee in Pune Municipal Corporation PMC.

The PVA high command today decided that Mayor Datta Gaikwad, standing committee chairman Arun Dhimdhime and members of standing committee Sarita Badiyar, Shivaji Kshirsagar and Suman Mathwad will remain PVA members till they hold office.

Besides, PVA members Ramakant Andekar and Deokitai Shetty are also likely to remain in the party to avoid losing their posts as chairpersons of the PMC8217;s divisional committees.

The decision comes in the wake of Kalmadi8217;s announcement that the Pune Vikas Aghadi will merge with the Congress. Kalmadi had made this announcement at a press conference here today.

As per the provisions in the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act, 1949 and sections 4 and 5 of Maharashtra Regional Disqualification Act of 1986, the office-bearers of a party have to resign from their posts in case of defection or merger of their party.

The same provisions have forced the PVA leaders to stay away from a complete merger. However, most PVA members are likely to join the Congress. Of the 124 corporators, 41 are PVA members.
