Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed on Thursday that the United States join Russia in developing a missile defence system he hopes will replace US plans to deploy a missile shield in central Europe.
At a meeting with President George W Bush during a Group of Eight summit, Putin suggested the United States and Russia jointly use a radar in Azerbaijan to develop a missile shield that would cover all of Europe.
8220;We can do this automatically, and hence the whole system which is being built as a result will cover not only part of Europe but the entire Europe without an exception,8221; Putin said after the meeting.
8220;This would also allow us not to redirect our rockets and, on the contrary, allow us to create conditions for joint work,8221; Putin was quoted as saying.
Putin vowed last week to target Europe if Washington pressed ahead with its central European missile shield plan.
It was the two presidents8217; first one-on-one meeting since Putin launched an attack on the Bush administration at a conference in February, where he accused Washington of trying to force its will on the world and become its 8220;single master8221;.
Putin appeared to adopt a conciliatory tone, saying that if they cooperated on missile defence 8220;then we8217;ll have no
problems.8221;
Bush said he wanted to have good relations with Moscow.
8220;There8217;s a lot of people who don8217;t like it when Russia and the US argue and it creates tension,8221; Bush told reporters. 8220;Russia8217;s a great country and so is the United States. It8217;s much better to work together.8221;
White House national security adviser Stephen Hadley told reporters Putin8217;s idea of using a Soviet-era radar system in Azerbaijan was 8220;a bold proposal8221;. He said US officials would have to study the offer and discuss it with the Russians.
