CHANDIGARH, Feb 23: The Punjab Cabinet in its meeting yesterday decided not to increase the existing number of liquor vends in the state.

According to official sources, the excise and taxation department would increase its collections by Rs 100 crore during the next financial year. The department would grant licences for opening of Beer Pubs throughout the state.

The cabinet also discussed an 18-point directive issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for improving sales tax collections. The High Court had directed the state government to take effective steps to control sales tax evasion especially by transport companies. The High Court had earlier asked the CBI to look into the matter and to present a detailed report.

It was considered by the cabinet to set up sales tax barriers at the inter-state borders for effective recovery. But, no final decision was taken.
