CHENNAI, MARCH 30: Punjab slipped from 145-3 to 258 all out on the opening day of their quarter-final Ranji Trophy cricket match against Tamil Nadu. By close of play, Tamil Nadu were 40 without loss at the MAC Stadium on Thursday.
Skipper Sridharan Sharath’s decision to take field paid handsome dividends. The high point was his handling of the resources (Robin Singh not making it from Sharjah). The bowlers were used in short spells, keeping the surprise element all through. Kumaran came into his own in the second spell after the pasting he took early on, to pick up two wickets, while Mahesh (3-55) and Gokulakrishnan (1-45) concentrated their line of attack on and around the off-stump to keep Punjab on a leash.
But it was Aashish Kapoor’s day. The wicket of his brother-in-law Vikaram Rathour spurred him on. He hit the deck spot on and invited the batsmen to use the feet with his flight. When he had a tentative Pankaj Dharmani edge a faster one first ball after lunch, the pendulum had swung TN’s way.
Reuben Paul played his role admirably and just about caught everything which came his way.
The afternoon belonged to Yuvraj Singh, the star of the recent U-19 World Cup winning squad. Easy in his stance and elegant in his ways, he made one wonder as to where from the power he could generate in those screaming carpet drives. He hit 10 fours in his 44.
TN opener Sridharan Sriram and Sadagoppan Ramesh settled down well, almost mocking at the attacking field with a spate of boundaries. Sriram was the more assured, and the two carry a lot of hopes when the battle resumes on Friday.
