New rakes for Jhelum, Ahimsa Express
For the first time since its inception in the mid-70s, the Central Railway is in the process of providing five brand-new power-brake rakes for the Pune-Jammu Tawi Jhelum Express. The second of the Jhelum rakes, built at Central Railway8217;s Matunga workshop, departed from Pune on Wednesday afternoon, divisional traffic manager Sanjay Tripathi told The Indian Express.

New rakes are on cards for Ahimsa Express and Jnanaganga/ Azad Hind Express trains as part of a plan to phase out vacuum-brake rakes.Tripathi said. The rakes of all Pune-Mumbai trains were first to be modified under the plan providing the trains better breaking systems and quick pick-up similar to an electric motor unit EMU train. Introduction of power-brake rakes eventually would improve on the journey timings, the DTM added.
