
PUNE, May 16: The Pune Cricket Carnival8217; was inaugurated in the city by the hands of Pratibha Pawar, to coincide with the inauguration of the World Cup 8217;99 in England on Friday.
To the uninitiated, the Pune Cricket Carnival, the brainchild of former Indian captain Chandu Borde and local entrepreneur Ajay Chaudhary, is the event that aims to Bring England to Pune!8221; and 8220;8230;enhance the excitement in watching the matches.8221;
The five acre garden situated near Pudumjee Paper Mills in Chinchwad, has been completely transformed to resemble the Mecca of cricket, complete with policemen dressed up as the English bobbies, soft drink trolleys and the famous beer garden among other things.
The highlight of the show are the two life size screens 22 feet diagonally that will display the matches live. quot;One has been set in the lawn, for the hard core cricket fanatics who want nothing but the ball-by-ball action. The other has a more picnic style setting, with soft drink trolleys intervening and so on,quot; informed Ajay. To enhance the ambience of Lords, there will also be manual scoreboards besides the screen coming up in the next week.
The novelty of the venture has persuaded the British High Commission, British Tourism and the British Trade Association to become participants in the venture. Therefore, there will be short films on various aspects of British life, the travel spots in the country, segments on top universities like Oxford and Cambridge and so on.
The Carnival also has almost 30 different types of food items, various competitions and so on. For the children, there is a special section of fun and games, to keep them happily absorbed while their parents enjoy the matches.
