Army units rush forth
Even as the unique War Memorial at Morwada Gardens is nearing completion, the Express-Citizens8217; War Memorial Committee has received generous donations from various army units to perpetuate the memory of the men and officers of the three wings of the armed forces who died in action since the independence.

The latest to contribute is the Mahar Regiment which has sent in Rs 20,000. Maratha Light Infantry has also donated Rs 25,000.

This is in addition to Rs 25,000 of the Bombay Engineer Group and Centre, Rs 10,000 of the Regiment of Artillery and Rs 5,000 of the Armoured School and Centre received earlier.

While the monument has been erected entirely with the civilian contribution, that from the army units is being utilised to meet the cost of engraving the 1080 names of the martyrs in uniform, hailing from Maharashtra, on marble panels at the memorial site.

The memorial is getting ready for the inaugural ceremony during the first fortnight of August, which is also the last fortnight of the golden jubilee year of nation8217;s independence.

Express-Citizens8217; War Memorial Committee which collected funds for the unique project had pledged that it would erect the memorial to the guardians of our frontiers during the golden jubilee year.
