Armed men rob jewellers on Deccan Queen
Armed thieves entered the Pune-bound Deccan Queen on Saturday evening and robbed some passengers of their valuables at gunpoint and decamped with goods totaling Rs 27,650.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Narendra Dosa, the complainant said, four thieves entered the air-conditioned compartment he was traveling in when the train made a brief halt at Shivajinagar railway station.

“The four men were armed with a country-made revolver and knives and instead of targeting just any passenger, they made for a group of businessmen in the compartment.”

According to the police, the men who bore the brunt of the theft are all jewellers who travel by the train every Saturday to buy jewellery from Mumbai. According to police inspector in-charge of the Railway Police Station, Suresh Shirkhe, “It seems to be an inside job. The culprits obviously knew that the businessman travelled on Saturdays with their valuables.”

Strangely enough, when the passengers tried to stop the train by pulling the emergency chain minutes after the incident, the train did not stop till it arrived at the Pune Railway Station. “Many of us tried to stop the train,” says Dosa, “and we pulled at the emergency chain a number of times but the train did not stop. Had it stopped, we could have informed the police at Shivajinagar itself and probably nabbed the culprits.” As per the complaint, the thieves entered the compartment and went straight to Amrutlal Solanki and his co-passenger, Ramesh Laxmichand Kaswa, both jewellers. The thieves took away their suitcases, two mobile phones, a digital diary and a calculator.
