
Railings for Sinhagad Ghat soon
State Public Works Minister Nitin Gadkari has agreed to install iron chains similar to those used in Pasarani Ghat, at the Sinhagad Ghat in order to prevent the frequent occurrence of accidents on the road leading to Sinhagad fort.
It may be recalled that the Akrahazar point8217; on the road has been proving a major accident-prone spot claiming several lives, the latest in the series being the one in which Risbud couple from the city along with their six-year-old child were killed on the ghat road last week.
Following strong public outcry over safety hazards on the ghat road after the Risbuds tragedy, MLA Girish Bapat and city corporator Ujjwal Keskar appealed to the minister to install iron chains which the latter agreed to principally.
8220;A delegation of BJP corporators will follow-up the issue with city chief engineer,8221; said Bapat in a press release on Sunday.
Dacoits flee with truck
After a spate of dacoities in which houses were targeted, four dacoits attacked a truck driver near Balewadi and drove away the vehicle carrying medicines worth Rs 50 lakh on Friday night.
Police suspect that the dacoits may have taken the truck towards Sangamner from the Pune-Nashik Road. Truck driver Harishchandra Ramprasad Vishwakarma has lodged a complaint in this regard.
The medicines of Cipla Pharmaceuticals were being transported from Mumbai to Chennai by the truck AP 09 U-6823. When the truck was nearing the Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, the dacoits who were travelling in another truck forced the driver to halt his vehicle. The driver was threatened and assaulted seriously. They later took hold of the truck and speeded away with the vehicle. The Chatuhshrungi police is investigating the case.
Jawan killed
An Army jawan was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck carrying sand on Pune-Alandi Road in the wee hours of Sunday.
The pillion rider sustained serious injuries in the accident. The deceased has been identified as Prabhu Kisanrao Magar 30 of 101 Infantry battalion. His friend Bal Gunda Patil 40 of the same battalion, who was riding pillion, has been admitted to Cantonment Hospital.
Police have arrested truck driver Ratan Mahadev Chavan 29. Magar and Patil who sustained serious injuries in the accident were moved first to Sassoon Hospital and later to the Cantonment Hospital after the mishap. However the former succumbed to his injuries at the Cantonment Hospital.
Conman held
Farashkhana police have arrested one Mohammad Lakhani 60, a resident of Lohegaon who allegedly duped several shops and establishments by issuing bogus cheques.
Various items worth Rs 88,000 purchased by Lakhani have been recovered.
