One would never imagine that the transfer of the head of Delhi circle of Archaeological Survey of India would raise so much dust. The incumbent, an under secretary-level officer, is due to be transferred to some other circle. Even before the position has fallen vacant, letters of recommendations have started pouring in from powerful politicians, some seeking an extension for the incumbent, others, including senior cabinet ministers, pushing their own favourites. The reason is not far to seek. The Government has sanctioned a budget of Rs 26 crore for the Delhi circle for renovation of historical monuments in the city before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Not surprisingly, most of the politicians sending recommendations are either from Delhi or have a constituency in the Capital to promote.
