PATIALA, June 2: The nine-day old fast-unto-death of the protesting Punjab State Electricity Board Operator Driver Association today came to an end after a compromise was reached between the board management and representatives of the drivers.

The drivers called off their strike after a top-level official of the Board offered a glass of juice to Chunni Lal, a leader of the drivers who had sat on the fast yesterday after two other leaders Kanahaiya Singh and Surinder Singh Khatra were forcibly taken to the Government Rajindra Hospital here to be administered medical aid.

According to a spokesman of the Board, the compromise had been reached between the two parties after long deliberations. The management had assured the drivers that there would not be any vicimisation of any employee of the Board regarding this matter and the concerned junior engineer against whom the drivers had complained, will be asked to proceed on leave and a inquiry will be started against him. Also, the period when the drivers were on the strike would be condoned by getting leaves from the drivers. The spokesman said the management will have a special meeting with the representatives of the drivers soon to sort out their other demands.

Talking later to Indian Express, general secretary of the PSEB Operators Driver Association, Jaspal Singh Aujla said that the association would withdraw its agitation fully, only when it gets a written agreement from the board management. He said that the association will also not allow the board management to shift drivers of the head office in any retaliatory manner.

Though the drivers did not comment about when they would resume their duties, the board spokesman later said that the drivers would resume their official duties from tomorrow.
