World powers express 8216;deep concern8217; about Iran8217;s nuke programme

An resolution,expected to be approved today,says it was 'essential' for Iran,IAEA to intensify dialogue.

World powers overcame differences at the UN atomic watchdog with a resolution of 8220;deep8221; concern about Iran8217;s nuclear programme but set Tehran no deadline,as the IAEA chief proposed a visit.

A resolution lodged at the International Atomic Energy Agency by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany,the P51,8221;expresses deep and increasing concern8221; about Iran8217;s activities.

But to assuage Chinese and Russian misgivings,it sets no deadline for Iran to respond,requesting instead agency head Yukiya Amano to report to the IAEA board in March on Tehran8217;s 8220;implementation of this resolution.8221;

Amano said at the start of the meeting that he had written to Iran on November 2 proposing a 8220;high-level8221; visit to Tehran,saying 8220;clarifying all outstanding issues was in the interests of Iran,and other countries.8221;

He told reporters: 8220;The information we have received in the past three years has given us a clearer picture of Iran8217;s nuclear programme. We now have more pieces of the jigsaw puzzle.

8220;It is clear that Iran has a case to answer.8221;

The resolution,expected to be approved by the 35-nation IAEA board of governors on Friday,said it was 8220;essential for Iran and the Agency to intensify their dialogue.8221;

It calls on Tehran 8220;to comply fully and without delay with its obligations under relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.8221;

It expresses 8220;continuing support for a diplomatic solution,and calls on Iran to engage seriously and without preconditions in talks aimed at restoring international confidence.8221;
