The trigger

The killing of Pradip BODO,a former cadre of the Bodo Liberation Tigers, and his three friends on July 20 triggered the riots in Kokrajhar

When Pradip Bodo and his three friends left home in Kokrajhar town on July 20,his wife cautioned him against travelling through Narabari, the Muslim quarter of the town. “I told him not to go towards Narabari but he did not listen to me,” says Rompa Bodo.

At about 8.30 p.m.,Rompa’s brother came home to tell her that Pradip and his friends had been killed. Eyewitnesses later told the family that Pradip and his friends were assaulted and were being taken away by the police in a van when a mob pounced on the police team. They took away Pradip and his friends and stabbed them repeatedly with choppers.

“I have no idea why my husband was killed in such a gruesome manner. He had returned to a normal life after being underground for a long time as a BLT (Bodo Liberation Tigers) cadre,” says Rompa. After leaving the BLT,Pradip had trained with the BSF for a while before returning home and becoming a contractor. “He was brutally killed for no reason,” says Rompa.
