An Italian court today sentenced former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to a year in prison over the publication of leaked transcripts from a police wiretap in a newspaper that he owns.
Berlusconi, who faces two more verdicts this month for tax fraud and having sex with an underage prostitute, can appeal the conviction which would suspend the sentence under Italian law.
The verdict carries no impact on Berlusconi8217;s eligibility to participate in a new government. His center-right coalition finished third in parliamentary elections that saw now clear winner. Talks on forming a new government are expected to begin March 20.
The charge relates to the 2005 publication in of a wiretapped call that was part of an investigation into a failed bid to take over a bank.
