Fernando Alonsos exploits this season has earned him the respect of not just fans but also his rivals as the double world champion clings on to the lead of the championship despite a strong challenge from his competitors.

The Spaniard is currently leading the standings in a relatively modest Ferrari, snatching opportunities whenever he can while other contenders fall, netting him the admiration of Martin Whitmarsh.

I think his biggest advantage is lots of natural talent and he’s a super keen competitor, the McLaren team principal told F1Pulse.com exclusively. His biggest advantage is that he’s a very, very tough competitor. He’s hard to beat even if he’s not in the most competitive car.

He takes points and that’s what you should do when you are trying to win the world championship, Whitmarsh pointed out. I think he’s done a great job so far this year.

Hopefully we can hunt him down a little bit in the coming races and snatch it away from him. That’s the idea anyway, he added.
