More than a dozen people resorted to stone pelting and vandalism at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital in Pune’s Hadapsar Wednesday morning following the death of their 77-year-old relative who was being treated at the facility.
The Pune police said they were detaining the agitated relatives of the patient, and the hospital was filing a complaint.
Officers of the Hadapsar Police Station said a large group of relatives of the patient who passed away at the Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital during treatment, started creating a ruckus around 11 am.

“Our initial information suggests that these people are relatives of the patient. And following the patient’s death, they started pelting stones and damaged the glass panes of the entrance and windows. They used barricade stands to break the glass,” said an officer from the Hadapsar Police Station.
“After receiving the call, our teams reached the spot. We are in the process of detaining these people. As of now, we do not have reports on injuries to any person in this incident. We will investigate the sequence of events leading to the incident,” the officer added.
Dr Sunil Rao, Chief Operating Officer, Sahyadri Hospitals, told The Indian Express that Keru Sadashiv Sapkal was admitted to the hospital in Hadapsar on November 28.
“He was being treated for acute pancreatitis at a private nursing home in Hadapsar, and after an internal perforation, the relatives brought the patient to Sahyadri Hospital. Our surgical team, including Dr Milind Chakne, Dr Madhuri Jagtap and Dr Deepak Kawde, successfully treated the patient and closed the perforation. Dr Kapil Borawake, critical care expert and Director of ICU, also managed the patient,” Dr Rao said.
“The patient had recovered well. However, due to his long-standing comorbidities, there was a slow deterioration, and the relatives were also counselled about the medical condition. Unfortunately, he passed away this morning. Despite our counselling the relatives, they turned abusive and this morning pelted stones and damaged part of the building. We will be filing a police complaint,” Dr Rao added.
