Sri Lanka has assured the United States that it will implement the devolution proposals of the Indo-Lanka accord signed in 1987 while thanking Washington for its assistance in fighting the war against LTTE.
Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said his government proposed to bring the devolution package as envisaged in the accord through a 13th Amendment,a foreign ministry release said.
Colombo conveyed these views when the US Deputy Secretary of States James Steinberg met Bogollagma in Singapore recently. He also thanked the US Government for its assistance and cooperation in combating terrorism.
The Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord was signed in Colombo in July,1987 between the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Late Sri Lankan President J R Jayawardene.
It was aimed at resolving the Sri Lanka Civil War.
Bogollagama told the top US diplomat that Sri Lanka wished to have a wider and more comprehensive engagement with other countries in the post-conflict era. He said the Tamil political leaders in the country today had greater freedom after defeating terrorism.
The Sri Lankan Minister elaborated on the support extended by the US with regard to money laundering by LTTE activists.
