Shooting and weightlifting have always contributed in swelling India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games and the players from the host nation would look to better their record when they compete before the home crowd in favourable conditions from Monday.
Indians have been so dominant in these disciplines that now they 20 weightlifting and 15 shooting records in their kitty.
Kunjarani Devi and dope-tainted Shailaja Pujari hold three records each in their respective categories in weightlifting 2002,a performance that helped India achieve their best ever medal haul of 69 till date.
Shooters are not far behind with Anjali Bhagwat having three records,including one with team,to her credit. Gagan Narang boasts two individual records,besides six team records by India.
Anjali holds the women’s 50m rifle three position and women’s air rifle individual and team records that she claimed in 2002.
In the previous edition,Gagan Narang gave two record performances — in men’s 50m rifle three position and air rifle in Indian shooters’ golden glut.
Samresh Jung has two team (25 standard pistol and air pistol team) and one individual (air pistol) records to his credit,all of them in last year’s Games in Melbourne.
Jaspal Rana (25m standard pistol),Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (double trap),Vijay Kumar (rapid fire pistol) and Roopa Unnikrishan (smallbore sport rifle prone) have one record each to their names.
In all,India have six records in team events in shooting.
