New Delhi: Tipped to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games,top Indian woman weightlifter Soniya Chanu said a good show in the mega event will be a confidence booster for the Asian Games in China. “Our preparation is good and I am hopeful of a medal in the Commonwealth Games. Our coach Harnam Singh has motivated us enough to bring glory to the nation and we are trying to prove his efforts right,” Chanu,who is competing in 48kg,said. “The Asian Games are tougher than the Commonwealth Games and a good performance here is important for the Asian Games in November in China,” she said. Harnam said he expects 10-12 medals from her wards.

China backs India

Beijing: China,which stunned the world by showcasing the 2008 Olympics,backed India’s ability to conduct a successful Commonwealth Games and said the government in New Delhi has made “great efforts” to host them. Conducting such a large event is a challenging job,Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu said and wished India success. “I think the Indian government has made great efforts to prepare for the games. I wish it will be a successful one,” Jiang said. China is itself preparing to hold the 16th Asian Games in the southern city of Guangzhou in November this year. “No matter which country,to host such large scale games is quite a challenge,” Jiang said.
