Overnight joint leader Jeev Milkha Singh could not recreate the opening round magic and turned in a one-under 71 to slip to the tied eighth spot at the halfway stage of the 8.5 million World Golf Championships on Saturday.
Jeev, who had shot an opening round 65,faltered on a treacherous back nine and was five strokes off the pace after two days with a total of eight-under 136. The Chandigarh-pro shares the eighth spot with, among others,Englands Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter 67.
Off to a great birdie-birdie start,Jeev completed a flawless front nine after picking up another stroke on the eighth to make the turn three-under. The back-nine started equally well for the Indian as he reeled off birdies on the 10th and 12th but it all went downhill thereafter as he stumbled to back-to-back bogeys on the 13th and 14th.
Had it not been for a 16th-hole birdie,Jeev would have failed to break par as he had a disastrous bogey-double bogey end to his day at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa.
Meanwhile, world number three Phil Mickelson raced two shots clear after firing a six-under-par 66. He leads fellow American Nick Watney, who carded a bogey-free 67,by two strokes. American Kenny Perry and British teenager Rory McIlroy were tied for third, three off the pace.
Mickelson started at the 10th but followed an opening birdie by dropping a shot two holes later on the Blue Monster course. The left-hander drove out of bounds at the 12th before rallying with six birdies, including an excellent chip-in at the par-four seventh,to finish on 13-under 131.
Tiger Woods returned a 70 for 141. The world number one started well with birdies at the first and fourth. He dropped back with bogeys at the sixth and 10th before recovering with two birdies at the 12th and 17th.
Today felt a lot better than yesterday and yesterday it felt a lot better than it did in Tucson, Woods said. Im starting to get a feel for being in that environment again and it is starting to feel better and better.
