Kevin Pietersen struck a blistering half century against the country of his origin as England beat South Africa by 39 runs for their second successive victory in a Group E Super Eight match to inch closer to a semi-final berth in the World Twenty20.
Pietersens 53 and his 94-run second-wicket partnership with Craig Kieswetter (41) laid the platform for Englands 168 for seven at the Kensington Oval. Pietersen hit eight fours and a six in his 33-ball innings and Kieswetter slammed three boundaries and two sixes to accumulate 94 runs in just 63 balls for the second wicket after skipper Paul Collingwood elected to bat.
South Africa,in reply, suffered a batting collapse to fold out for to 129 with an over to spare. Only Graeme Smith (19),Jacques Kallis (11),JP Duminy (39) and Johan Botha (12) managed double figures against the clinical English attack.
For England,Graeme Swann and Ryan Sidebottom scalped three wickets each, while Michael Yardy and Stuart Broad picked up two apiece.
Chasing 169 to win,South Africa lost half their side inside 10 overs with the scoreboard reading 55,and,were saved further humiliation thanks only to Duminys 25-ball innings. Duminy added 37 runs with Mark Boucher (9) and shared 21 runs with Botha to provide some respectability.
