Determined Dilshan shows the way

Tillakaratne Dilshan hit his 11th Test century Saturday to pull Sri Lanka out of trouble on day two of the second Test against England, leading his team to 231-1 at the close. Matthew Priors second consecutive century looked to have put the home side in control at Lords with a first-innings 486 all out,but Dilshan survived a rocky first few overs after lunch to score 127 not out.

Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana 65 set a record opening partnership of 207 in matches between the sides with help from a benign pitch and some mundane bowling.

The intervention by Sri Lankas openers was crucial after its bowlers had looked short of ideas and low on morale at the start Saturday, allowing 68 off the first eight overs. Sri Lanka needs to win at Lords to have any chance of winning the three-Test series. Dilshan went after the frequent wayward balls served up by England pacers to give his team every chance of at least a draw, reaching his century from 129 balls in his second Test as captain.

Paranavitana anchored things as Dilshan looked set to make it through the day undefeated, but he went for another of Finns wide deliveries and edged to Andrew Strauss at slip. That brought Kumar Sangakkara to the crease, where he remained at the close of play on 13 not out.

Brief scores: Eng 1st innings 486 M Prior 126,A Cook 96; C Welegedara 4/122,R Lakmal 3/126 vs SL 1st innings 231/1 T Dilshan 127,N Paranavitana 65; S Finn 1/48
