Striker Ranty Martins starred with a brace as Dempo Sports Club regained top position in the I-League table defeating a 10-man Air India 3-1 in the round 15 clash of the football championship at the Balewadi Sports Complex. After a goalless first half,Martins,who had missed a penalty early in the match,helped the Goan side surge ahead in the 54th minute.
Fellow striker Koko Sakibo doubled the lead for Dempo in the 77th minute. Martins then rounded off the tally in the 88th minute to put the result beyond Air India8217;s control. The airmen scored a consolation goal through Sandeep Sangha in the second half injury time.
Dempo are now at 33 points from 15 matches,while Air India are stagnant at 20 points from 15 ties. In another match defending champions Salgaocar maintained their winning streak by scoring a resounding 4-0 win over bottom placed HAL,Bangalore,at the Nehru Stadium,Fatorda. Goals from Francis Fernandes 12th,Ryuji Sueoka 54th,substitutes Gilbert Oliveira 71st and Randeep Singh 85th took Salgaocar8217;s tally to 25 points from 15 matches. The visitors remained at the bottom with three points from 15 matches.
There was also dismay for Shillong Lajong who suffered their first defeat at home as they went down 2-0 to Churchill Brothers. Churchill dominated over Lajong for most part of the first half and scored the opener when Brazilian Roberto Silva converted a penalty for handball in the 34th minute.Silva then sealed the game 2-0 when he headed the ball into the net in the 78th minute.
