China says corruption still a severe problem

Corruption continues to be a problem even though China has punished several high-profile figures.

China says corruption in the country is still a severe problem even though efforts to combat it have intensified.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that the Communist Party8217;s discipline watchdog says the task of fighting corruption is still an 8216;arduous8217; one.

It says people have higher expectations for the ridding of corruption but it 8216;cannot be eradicated in the short term.8217;

Chinese President Hu Jintao has said corruption threatens the party8217;s grip on power.

China has launched numerous anti-graft campaigns in recent years. Some have seen judges and high-profile party figures sentenced to years in prison.

Netizens regularly complain when an official is spotted wearing an expensive-looking watch or in a luxury car.
