Two-time World Cup champion West Indies will be playing for little more than pride when they take on Bangladesh. They failed to reach the semi-finals after four successive defeats in the Super 8s, leaving skipper Brian Lara embarrassed at his team8217;s poor show.
They have logged just two points from the preliminary-round win over Ireland. But team manager and former skipper Clive Lloyd has implored his players to win the next two games and salvage some pride: 8220;Our past has been glorious and people expected us to perform well as we8217;ve done well recently,8221; said Lloyd.
Unheralded Bangladesh have caused some ripples, resulting in their best World Cup performance. They knocked out India in the preliminary round and then produced another stunning upset against South Africa. But their loss to debutant Ireland 8212; another surprise Super 8s qualifier 8212; has pushed them to the bottom of the standings, which skipper Habibul Bashar says he wants to avoid.
8220;We want to finish the World Cup with a good performance, hoping to avoid the last spot in the Super 8s,8221; he said. Bashar said it was important for the Bangladesh to do well at the end.
8220;To go home with some credit after our world Cup experience got soured through some listless cricket against Ireland,8221; he said. 8220;We look brilliant in one match and the next day we8217;re pretty ordinary.8221;
West Indies are eager to build some momentum for their forthcoming tour of England, which will start on May 12 and feature four Tests and three one-dayers, says vice captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, who is tipped to take over as skipper from Lara.
