Schools closed in some Rajasthan districts, in Jharkhand till Jan 8, Tripura till 10th; state-wise list

In Uttar Pradesh, schools up to Class 8 have been ordered closed in several districts amid cold wave and dense fog conditions, with the closure extended till January 14 in many areas. District administrations in the National Capital Region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, have also announced temporary closures of schools as low visibility and plummeting temperatures pose safety risks for students.

While some schools reopened on January 5, many across several Indian states and cities have been ordered shut as severe cold wave conditions continue to grip large parts of the country, disrupting academic schedules and prompting precautionary measures by state governments and district administrations.

Rajasthan administration has extended winter vacations in schools, especially for primary classes, in many districts, including Jaipur, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh and Sikar, owing to intense cold conditions and dense fog.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that all schools in the state will remain closed from January 6 to 10 in view of prevailing cold weather conditions. The decision applies to government, government-aided, and privately managed schools. Announcing the move on social media, the chief minister said the closure was necessitated due to extreme cold conditions across the state.

The Jharkhand government on Monday ordered the closure of all schools in the state due to cold wave and dense fog conditions till January 8. The directive applies to students from pre-nursery to Class 12. Moreover, no regular academic activities will be conducted during this period. Meanwhile, the department clarified that teachers and non-teaching staff of government schools will be required to report to their respective institutions and carry out non-academic duties as assigned.

Regarding pre-board examinations scheduled during the closure period, the department, in its order, stated that the competent authority of the concerned schools may take an appropriate decision on their conduct after assessing the prevailing weather conditions.

In the northeastern region, the Assam government has announced the closure of all schools till January 6 due to the prevailing cold wave, affecting students across government and private institutions.

In Delhi, many schools are currently observing scheduled winter vacations, though authorities have indicated that extensions may be considered if cold and fog conditions persist. States such as Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir are also witnessing extended winter breaks or weather-related school closures.

Education departments have urged parents and students to regularly check official notifications issued by district administrations and school authorities, as reopening dates may vary depending on local weather conditions. Officials have reiterated that the temporary closures are precautionary measures aimed at ensuring student safety amid extreme winter conditions.
