The power ministry is showing undue interest in the appointment of a director on the board of public sector PowerGrid Corporation Ltd PGCIL. Within days of the retirement of the previous incumbent S.C. Misra on February 28, the ministry has appointed J. Haque to the post even though the Public Enterprises Selection Board PESB has selected a candidate and recommended the name to the ministry three-and-a half months ago.

According to a ministry of power order dated March 9, the ministry has ordered the appointment of Haque to hold charge of the post 8216;8216;with immediate effect8217;8217; for a period of three months or till 8216;8216;the date of appointment of a regular incumbent.8217;8217;

Haque is a director operations on the PGCIL board and will now hold additional charge of projects even though the post has been advertised and the selection process for the same was comcluded in November last. The ministry of power has been sitting on PESB8217;s recommendations since them without forwarding it to the appointments committee of the Cabinet.

The move has raised eyebrows as an ad hoc appointment is normally made by the PSU till the regular appointment is cleared by the government, but this time the ministry has taken it upon itself to order the interim arrangement. Issues are being raised about the fact that the previous incumbent was in charge of the Projects and Electrical portfolios and all procurement for the corporation were routed through this post. 8216;8216;It is strange that the ministry should be involved in the interim appointment, especially since the regular incumbent8217;s file has been pending with it,8217;8217; said a source.
